LUCKNOW: Sociologists from across the country will meet at Lucknow University where they will also assess the contribution of university's department of sociology in the rise and growth of sociology in the country. Organising secretary, also the head, sociology, department, Prof Rajesh Mishra said, "The department of Sociology in Lucknow University has entered in its 90s. Therefore, periodic self-reflection and selfevaluation becomes important in tracing down the history of the department."

On the eve of the conference, an interaction between reporters and Prof PS Vivek from sociology department, University of Mumbai, revealed startling facts about the 'sociology of spitting'. The main study, however, was carried out in Mumbai but an assumption on Lucknow revealed that the city accumulates nearly one crore litre of spit every year. According to Prof Vivek, it is believed that an average of 20% of the total population in the city consumes tobacco and gutka.

"Taking 10% of the total population in Mumbai, we found that a person spits 11 kilograms every year," said Prof Vivek. Taking 11 kgs per person per year with the total percentage of population indulge in spitting, the figures of Lucknow stood at one crore litre. Briefing more on the habit of spitting, Prof Vivek highlighted the reasons behind spitting. The traditions and conventions of Indian ethnicity cultural milieu are responsible for chewing `tobacco' or `gutka'.
