Pune- Varsity officials find loopholes in MTech-PhD department

From-http://www.indianexpress.com
The ambitious integrated M Tech-PhD course, which was started by the University of Pune (UoP) this year, has failed to impress as the officials from the varsity are complaining of loopholes in the functioning of the department. Though the department is running without a single regular faculty, the head of the department, however, cited it as a starting trouble and hoped that the problems will be rectified by December.

The structure of the integrated course is such that of the total 36 candidates, 18 are funded by the industry and 18 by the university. Throughout the course, the candidates will be working on industry-based problems in different companies. However, the question which has now been raised, if a student, during the research-based course creates a patent, should the ownership be given to the university or the industry?

Wasudev Gade, director, Board of Colleges and University Development said, “Since the course is in collaboration with the industry, if a students comes up with a patent, it will be shared by the university as well as the company where the student had carried out the research. We are still working out the logistics.”Such decisions need to be passed through the management council of UoP. However, most of the management council members seemed ignorant about the issue.

The department, which has commenced with the classes, lacks infrastructure. The university has devoted an entire floor to the department with audio-visual rooms as well as laboratories and libraries. But all the rooms are empty as the required equipment has not been installed,Head of the department, Aditya Abhyankar, said, “The equipment has not yet been put in place but we are hopeful that everything should be in place by December. Currently, I am the only regular faculty here. We need at least 8-10 permanent faculty. We will hold interviews for the same on November 9.”

The department will be formally inaugurated on November 11.
