The students, who should be the focus of any university, usually come last in Nagpur University scheme of things. This time, NU administration has postponed the winter exam papers for two days to accommodate 98th convocation ceremony on November 26.
NU insiders said many papers scheduled to be conducted on November 25 and 26 were being put off leading to severe discontent among students. The subjects whose papers were being postponed include engineering, mass communication, MCA, and MSc.
Controller of examinations (CoE) Siddharth Kane confirmed to TOI that papers for two days were being rescheduled so that those getting medals could attend the convocation. "Many students are also the recipient of the gold medals and other prizes. To enable them to attend convocation, we have rescheduled the exams," he clarified.
He said the entire exam section staff would be busy with the convocation work and, therefore, no one would be in position to conduct exams. "We deferred the papers a day earlier to the ceremony so that even outside Nagpur candidates can attend the programme," he said.
Sources said all papers scheduled on November 25 and 26 were being pushed back 20 days. Now those would be held on December 15 and 16. Consequently, results of all these courses would be delayed thus piling on miseries for the students. NU had failed to conduct two convocations (for 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic sessions) because statutory bodies like management, academic councils and senate were not constituted. This meant over one lakh students waited for their degrees for over a year. Now, when the bodies were formed after a gap of over one year, the innocent students are being made to suffer.
Insiders asked why convocation couldn't be scheduled before or after the exams so such dislocation could be avoided.
