Panchkula TOI News- Over 1.7L illiterate in Panchkula

From - TOI News

PANCHKULA: Panchkula, known as the Paris of Haryana, is suffering at the literacy count. As per the record and data provided by the district administration, out of a population of more than 4 lakh, 1,70,616 are illiterates. While the number of male illiterates in the city is 78,347, women's number is high at 92,269.

The data shows that amongst male illiterates, 51,849 are from rural areas and 26,490 from urban areas. Among females, 61,574 illiterates are from rural areas and 30,695 from urban ones. Surprising, even urban parts of the district is hit by the illiteracy problem in spite of so many schemes and educational drives like Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan.

"Everyone believes that Panchkula is the most educated and developed city but who knows that even this most developed city has large number of illiterate people," said Kamlesh Gupta, a resident of Sector 8, Panchkula.

The number of literates here is 2,92,795 out of which 1,46,593 are from rural areas and 1,51,202 from urban sectors.

"The administration should carry out awareness programmes, particularly for women. As the latter don't have time in the morning to devote, provision for evening courses should be made for them. It' strange that there is not much difference in the literacy levels between the rural and urban areas of Panchkula," said Gurmukh Chaudhary, a resident of Sector 2, Panchkula.

"There are some people who have not seen school till now. Though schools do not lag behind in providing education, adults need good teaching courses by NGOs. If good initatives are taken, Panchkula can reach up to a point of zero illiteracy soon," said Krit Serai, principal of Satluj Public School, Sector 2, Panchkula.
