In a move to curb the menace of unauthorised occupants (‘parasites’) in students hostels, the University of Pune (UoP) has decided to hire a team of 20 ex-servicemen to guard them.
The varsity has 16 hostels; eight of them in one complex, while the others are spread across the campus.
Chief rector of hostels, Bhaskar Shejwal, confirmed that top university officials had sanctioned his request to hire 20 ex-servicemen to beef up security at the hostels.“We had some guards at hostels but they were not permanently stationed here. There was a long pending demand to get full-time security guards to restrict entry of outsiders or unauthorised students in the hostels,” Shejwal said.
According to him, the move also stems from the fact that the university has become stricter and has started drives to weed out outsiders. “So far, we have sorted out the problem in the girls’ hostels and even in boys’ hostels. Many unauthorised inmates were removed. Also, 237 students were issued guest cards,”
said Shejwal.
Seven guards will be deployed in each shift at the 16 hostels by grouping hostel complexes and dividing the staff between them.
