Padma Awards: Veteran Bollywood actor Shashi Kapoor, India's first woman photographer Homai Vyarawalla, tribal artist Jivya Soma Mhase, actors Kajol and Irrfan Khan, Chhau dance exponent Makar Dhwaj Darogha and Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia were among those who were conferred the Padma awards.

Child Sex Ratio: India's child sex ratio continues to plummet, indicating that female feticide and infanticide remain rampant. Provisional data released by the census office for 2011 shows that the child sex ratio (0-6 years) has further declined to 914 girls for every 1,000 boys as compared to 927 in 2001.

Literacy Rate: India’s literacy rate has touched 74%, according to the provisional results of the 2001 Census, up from 65% in 2001 and just 52% in 1991. But this is well short of the target set by the Planning Commission to achieve a literacy rate of over 85% by 2011-12.

This also means India has added another Brazil to its population in the last 10 years despite population growth slowing down. Mainland China`s population is 1.35 billion.
