The two recognised federations of railway employees. All India Railwaymen Federation (AIRF) and National Federation of Indian Railwaymen (NFIR) were pressuring Railway Board to scrap written exam format.
Their contention was that when the Safety Related Retirement Scheme tSRRS) was announced in year 2004. there was no rule for written test or even physical education test based on rules applicable for compassionate appointment procedure. When this scheme was widened by then Railway Minister Mamta Banerjee and LARGESS got introduced, written and physical education test was incorporated in it.

Finally, their efforts bore fruit and Railway Board agreed to scrap written exam format beginning form June 30 2013. onward, said  Jr. General Secretary, AIRF.
The safety category posts that quality for the LARGESS include gangmen, pointsmen, khalasis in Signal & Telecom and Carriage & Wagon, gangmen. Loco Pilots. The condition in die scheme is that the employee opting for LARGESS must be in 53-58 age group and not drawing more than Rs 1,800 Grade Pay and completed 20 years in service. The employee can nominate his/her ward and minimum requirement for the ward was SSC pass. The scheme found many takers but the rule of Grade Pay of Rs 1,800 ensured the hopefuls do not open the flood gates or else it would create a problem for Railways.
Local railway officials said, the test was mostly objective, just to test the general knowledge of the aspiring candidates.
The success rate in the exams was quite impressive and over the year Railways have inducted technically qualified staff through LARGESS
