Mumbai University To Give Excess land in Kalina to private players

The University of Mumbai reportedly plans to give unused land at its Kalina campus to private players in the name of “maximum utilisation of resources”.

Senate member Sanjay Vairal raised objections to the proposal in the senate meeting on Thursday.

“In its perspective plan for the academic year 2012-13, the university wants to rope in private firms to set up professional self-finance departments on the campus. The land will be leased for 25 years,” Vairal alleged.

Vairal told DNA that around 230 acres of land at the Kalina campus is lying unused. “The plan says the campus is spread over 12.5 lakh sqft. While classrooms have been built on 22,000 sqft of area, labs have been set up on 84,000 sqft of area. The rest would be given to private firms to start the self-financed courses. Each department will have to collaborate with a foreign varsity, but induct faculty from the MU.”

Many senate members were upset with the implementation of the credit system. “More than 50% of the teachers are not approved. We should have strengthened our system instead of implementing the credit system,” said Dilip Karande, a senate member.

“The student-teacher ratio is 50:1. This is affecting assessment work in the credit system,” said Arti Prasad from SIWS College.
Vice chancellor Rajan Welukar said: “When a delegation visited the US, varsities raised concern about the Indian education system and said students at US varsities face difficulty because of lack of credit system in India. They appreciated the MU for implementing it.”
