No PG berths in Maharashtra under state quota to students doing MBBS abroad

THOUGH Medical Council of India (MCI) has relaxed the rule of giving Eligibility Certificate to the students wanting to pursue studies in foreign countries, die troubles for such students have not ended so far. Maharashtra Government has refused to give admission to foreign-returned MBBS students for Post Graduate course in the stale quota.

Due to severe shortage of MBBS seats in the country, often Indian students opt for medical education in China, Russia. Central America. Philippines among others every year. Getting MBBS degree in diese countries is relatively cheaper. A student can pursue medical studies abroad in less than Rs 30 lakh. In Maharashtra, a medical student has to pay. apart from the fee. a donation of up to Rs 80 lakh to get a seat in management quota. All this totals to Rs 1.5 crore. Earlier MBBS aspirants had to obtain eligibility certificate from  MCI.  Now.  MCI has removed [his condition and made it clear that the students who want to do MBBS from foreign countries on or after May 15. 2013 arc no! required to get the certificate. But MCI pointed out that these students should fulfil the eligibility criteria for admission to MBBS course as laid down in the Graduate Medical Education Regulation. 1997.

The students, after doing MBBS in foreign countries, wanting to pursue PG in India have to face screening test called as Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE). After passing the exam, they were asked to do one year compulsory internship in hospitals approved by MCI. After the internship, the students are given permanent registration by MCI. After getting the permanent registration they can practice as any other doctor or do jobs in government and private hospitals just like other doctors. But they can't take admission to PG course through state quota!
