GOSWAMI Tulsidas Ram-charit Manas

GOSWAMI Tulsidas was born to a Brahmin family in the 16th century in the Banda district of UP. His parents abandoned him because he was born under an inauspicious star. He was brought up by a maid and after she died, he lived on alms he collected from door to door. At the age of five, he was adopted by an ascetic under whom he started his early lessons in Ayodhya. He then spent a major part of his life in Varanasi learning Sanskrit and the Vedas. He was an ardent devotee of Rama. According to legend, once a gang of thieves confessed to Tulsidas that they had been unable to rob his house because a youth stood outside guarding it. Tulsidas instinctively knew that it was his beloved Rama who had guarded his house. Overcome with emotion, he gave away all his worldly possessions so that his lord would never have to be troubled again.
He then settled down in Kashi and began to write poetry. His most important work is Ram-charit Manas, popularly known as Tulsi Ramayan. It is revered as a scripture in Northern India. Mahatma Gandhi called it the greatest book in all devotional literature.'
The emperor of the metaphor' as he was called also wrote Hanuman Chalisa, a hymn, which is very popular.
