Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) is a safe motherhood intervention under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) being implemented with the objective of reducing maternal and neo-natal mortality by promoting institutional delivery among the poor pregnant women. The Scheme has contributed immensely in increasing the Institutional deliveries among the BPL, ST and SC population. The progress of Scheme has been remarkable since inception and is expected to achieve good results in the years to come. 

Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of Gujarat has created wide network of health and medical care facilities in the state to provides primary, secondary and tertiary health care atthe door step of every citizen of Gujarat with prime focus on BPL families, marginalized population and weaker sections in rural and urban slum areas. Department also takes appropriate actions to create adequate educational facilities for medical and paramedical manpower in the state of Gujarat. 

"जननी योजना" आशा-सहयोगिनी - एक नया प्रयास
समेकित बाल विकास सेवा कार्यक्रम में 0 से 3 वर्ष के बच्चों के पोषण एवं स्वास्थ्य स्तर पर विशेष ध्यान देने तथा गर्भवती महिलाओं के सुरक्षित प्रसव एवं उनके स्वास्थ्य की देखभाल के प्रति जनसाधारण में चेतना जागृत करने तथा घर पर ही पोषण तथा पोषण सहायक सेवाए तथा परामर्श उपलब्ध करवाने के लिए प्रत्येक ऑंगनबाड़ी केन्द्र पर जननी योजना अन्तर्गत एक अतिरिक्त महिला सहयोगिनी के समावेश का निर्णय वित्तीय वर्ष 2004-05 में लिया गया था। सहयोगिनियों का चयन ग्राम सभा द्वारा किया जाता है। सहयोगिनियॉं, आंगनबाड़ी कार्यकर्ताओं के सहयोगी के रूप में कार्य करती है। इनका मुख्य कार्य आंगनबाड़ी केन्द्रों पर नहीं आ पाने वाली गर्भवती स्त्रियों, धात्री माताओं व 3 वर्ष कम आयु के बच्चों तक आईसीडीएस सेवाएं पहुंचाना है। सहयोगिनी पोषण एवं स्वास्थ्य दिवस के दिन आंगनबाड़ी केन्द्र की गतिविधियों में सहयोग प्रदान करने के साथ प्रतिदिन घर-घर जाकर परिवार सम्पर्क के माध्यम से लाभान्वितों को आईसीडीएस की सेवाए प्रदान करती है। इनके कार्यो की उपयोगिता को देखते हुए राष्ट्रीय ग्रामीण स्वास्थ्य मिशन के अन्तर्गत आशा का कार्य भी सहयोगिनी को देने का निर्णय कर आशा-सहयोगिनी का नया पदनाम निर्धारित किया है।
